Living environments

The landscape in Laponia is made up of dramatically contrasting types of nature – montane coniferous forest, forests of mountain birch and three different alpine belts in the high mountains. It is not the northerly location, but the height above sea level that makes them so different. Vast wetlands dominate in certain areas. There it is so flat that it is difficult for the water to run off.

Laponia’s different types of nature have formed the habitats of plants, animals, insects and people. Profound knowledge of the constant changes in nature has been developed, and has for millennia been a prerequisite for human survival in Laponia.
