Rijtjem lies right on the boundary of Laponia. East of Rijtjemjåhkå stream, we are in the World Heritage Area and Stora Sjöfallet/Stuor Muorkke National Park.
Rijtjem is the main settlement for Unna Tjerusj Sámi community and is an important crossroads for many Sámi communities. From here you can continue into Sámi communities both north and south of Rijtjem.
The village has been heavily affected by hydroelectric exploitation. This lake has been regulated four times. Each time, those living here have been forced to move to higher ground. When the water level in the reservoir is high and the weather is bad, it can be difficult and dangerous to be on the lake.
